The Noun
যে শব্দ দিয়ে কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান, গুণ বা ভাবের নাম বোঝায়, তাকে Noun বলে। Noun-এর শ্রেণি ও গণনযোগ্যতা (countable/uncountable) থেকে BCS-এ নিয়মিত প্রশ্ন আসে।
Noun-এর প্রকারভেদ
সহজ করে বুঝি
Noun চেনা সহজ — নাম বোঝালেই Noun। কিন্তু ভাগগুলো গুলিয়ে যায়। একটা সহজ ছবি ভাবো।
চোখে দেখা যায়, হাতে ধরা যায় এমন নাম (book, Dhaka, army) হলো Concrete Noun। আর যা কেবল অনুভব করা যায় — honesty, beauty, childhood — সেগুলো Abstract Noun।
পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি আসে Abstract Noun আর Collective Noun। তাই মনে রাখো: গুণ/ভাব = Abstract, দল/সমষ্টি = Collective।
পাঁচ প্রকার Noun

Concrete Noun = Proper + Common + Collective + Material. Abstract Noun আলাদা, কারণ তা ইন্দ্রিয়গ্রাহ্য নয়।
Abstract Noun গঠন

Collective Noun-এর verb
দলটিকে একক ধরলে verb singular; দলের সদস্যদের আলাদা ভাবলে verb plural (Noun of Multitude)।
- The committee has decided. (একক সিদ্ধান্ত → singular)
- The committee are divided in their opinion. (সদস্যরা ভিন্নমত → plural)
- The jury was unanimous. / The jury were divided.

Countable ও Uncountable Noun
সহজ করে বুঝি
ইংরেজিতে সব জিনিস গোনা যায় না — এই একটা ধারণা না বুঝলে many/much, few/little-এর প্রশ্নে বারবার ভুল হবে।
যা আলাদা আলাদা গোনা যায় (book, boy, apple) তা Countable — এদের plural হয়, a/an বসে। আর যা মেপে নিতে হয়, গোনা যায় না (water, rice, information, advice) তা Uncountable — এদের plural হয় না, a/an বসে না।
তাই ‘many information’ ভুল, ‘much information’ শুদ্ধ। এই ফাঁদেই সবচেয়ে বেশি প্রার্থী পড়ে।
Countable বনাম Uncountable

যেসব Noun সবসময় Uncountable (মনে রাখতেই হবে)
- information, advice, news, knowledge, evidence, progress
- furniture, luggage, baggage, machinery, equipment, stationery
- bread, butter, water, rice, sugar, milk, money
- poetry, scenery, weather, traffic, work, research
গোনার দরকার হলে সঙ্গে গণনার শব্দ বসাও: a piece of information, an item of news, two pieces of furniture।
রূপে Plural, অর্থে Singular

উল্টোটাও আছে — রূপে singular, অর্থে plural: cattle, poultry, people, police, vermin (The police are looking into it.)

পরীক্ষার ফাঁদ
- information, advice, furniture, news — plural হয় না; many নয়, much বসে।
- Mathematics/News দেখতে plural কিন্তু verb singular; police/cattle দেখতে singular কিন্তু verb plural।
- Collective noun-এ দল একক হলে singular verb, সদস্য আলাদা হলে plural verb।
মনে রাখার কৌশল
- Abstract Noun মনে রাখার সূত্র: গুণ/ভাব/অবস্থা — ছোঁয়া যায় না।
- Uncountable-কে গুনতে হলে ‘a piece of / an item of’ বসাও।
