Conjunction
দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দ, বাক্যাংশ বা বাক্যকে যুক্ত করে Conjunction। কোন জোড়ার সঙ্গে কোনটি বসে — সেটাই পরীক্ষার মূল প্রশ্ন।
Conjunction-এর প্রকার ও জোড়া
সহজ করে বুঝি
Conjunction হলো ভাষার আঠা — দুটো অংশকে জুড়ে দেয়। কিন্তু সব আঠা এক নয়।
Coordinating conjunction (and, but, or) সমান মর্যাদার দুটি অংশকে জোড়ে। আর Subordinating conjunction (because, although, if) একটা অংশকে আরেকটার অধীন করে দেয়।
সবচেয়ে বেশি প্রশ্ন আসে Correlative জোড়া থেকে — এরা সবসময় জোড়ায় চলে: either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also, both…and। একটার সঙ্গে অন্যটাই বসবে, অদলবদল করলেই ভুল।
তিন প্রকার Conjunction

Correlative জোড়া (মনে রাখতেই হবে)

| such … that / so … that | He is so weak that he cannot walk. |
| as … as / so … as | He is as tall as his brother. |
| lest … should | Read attentively lest you should fail. |
ভুল জোড়া পরীক্ষার প্রিয় ফাঁদ: ‘No sooner … when’ ✗, ‘neither … or’ ✗, ‘not only … but’ (also বাদ) — সতর্ক থাকো।
যেসব Conjunction একসঙ্গে বসে না
- Although/Though-এর সঙ্গে but বসে না: Although he is poor, he is honest. (but ✗)
- Because-এর সঙ্গে so বসে না: Because he was ill, he did not come. (so ✗)
- Unless-এর সঙ্গে not বসে না: Unless you work hard, you will fail. (do not work ✗)
- Lest-এর সঙ্গে not বসে না: Walk fast lest you should miss the bus.
নিজে চেষ্টা করো
‘Although he is poor, ___ he is honest.’ — but বসবে কি?
পরীক্ষার ফাঁদ
- Although/Though + but ✗; Because + so ✗ — একটাই যথেষ্ট।
- Unless ও Lest নিজেই নেতিবাচক — সঙ্গে not বসে না।
- Correlative জোড়া অদলবদল করা যাবে না: neither…nor, either…or।
মনে রাখার কৌশল
- জোড়াগুলো জোড়ায় মুখস্থ করো — একটা দেখলেই অন্যটা মনে পড়বে।
- No sooner … than; Hardly/Scarcely … when — জোড়া দুটো আলাদা।
